After Netflix’s The Irishman, Martin Scorsese’s Next Big Film Acquired By Apple TV+

By Rashmi Paharia - May 29, 2020 @ 01:05 pm

Killers Of The Flower Moon - Apple TV +Apple TV+ has acquired the rights to celebrated director Martin Scorsese’s much-talked-about biggie – “Killers Of The Flower Moon”. Apple acquired the rights to the movie after a fierce bidding war, which saw it pitted against the likes of prominent content producers, including Netflix.

Netflix had acquired Martin Scorsese‘s previous masterpiece The Irishman, and was keen to get its hands on Killers Of The Flower Moon next. The movie has generated a lot of buzz, also because it stars two of Scorsese’s favourite leading men – Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro.

Apple TV+ is in aggressive pursuit of revamping its content slate, and is prepping itself to give tough competition to the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. It has been on an acquiring spree recently, snagging big projects of prominent filmmakers and production houses. Its latest acquisition is a real jewel in the crown — auteur Martin Scorsese is the biggest name to be associated with, and “Killers of the Flower Moon” is a much-coveted project.

We had earlier reported that Martin Scorsese was hunting for a promoter loaded enough to put money behind his expensive production. The director’s movies are generally expensive propositions – The Irishman, acquired by Netflix, was one of the more expensive movies made by Scorsese. Killers Of The Flower Moon is being produced by Paramount Pictures, and has a proposed budget of $200 million.

Netflix had keen interest in Killers Of The Flower Moon, and also the wherewithal to share the financial load with Paramount. In the meanwhile, Apple has been on the hunt for high quality, high profile productions to lend heft to its content slate. Both are guaranteed in a Martin Scorsese production.

So then finally, Apple TV+ fought fiercely to acquire Killers Of The Flower Moon, and succeeded. The story of Killers Of The Flower Moon centres on a series of murders of wealthy Osage Native Americans in Oklahoma in the early 1920s, after oil deposits were discovered beneath their land. The film will first be released in theatres worldwide, after which it will stream exclusively Apple’s streaming service, its biggest title yet.
