Netflix has announced the release date for ‘Kingdom: Ashin of the North‘, a special episode that will, as per Netflix, expand the horizons of the Kingdom series. ‘Kingdom: Ashin of the North’ will premiere worldwide exclusively on Netflix on July 23, 2021.
‘Kingdom: Ashin of the North‘ will reveal the origins of the resurrection plant that triggered the avalanche of tragic events that swept through Joseon kingdom and a woman abandoned by all – Ashin.
The date announcement video for the Kingdom special episode released by Netflix begins with young Ashin holding a torch and entering an eerie cave in the dark. Inside, she discovers strange markings on a rock along with the mysterious resurrection plant. The accompanying copy reads, “to revive the dead, a price must be paid.” Thus begins the intriguing backstory of the epidemic, unveiling how the resurrection plant that grows in the northern regions traveled down to wreak havoc on Joseon land.
Written by Kim Eun-hee, ‘Kingdom: Ashin of the North’ is directed by Kim Seong-hun, who also directed ‘Kingdom’ season 1. Gianna Jun who appeared as adult Ashin at the end of season 2 will return to play her role as Ashin. Park Byung-eun will reprises his role as Min Chi-rok, the Head of the Royal Commandery Division who helped Crown Prince Lee Chang in fending off the infected from infiltrating the royal palace. Kim Sia (‘The House of Us’, ‘Miss Baek’) will play the role of Ashin as a child.
Offering a detailed back story and explanation as to how it all happened ‘Kingdom: Ashin of the North’ will launch globally only on Netflix on July 23, 2021.
