Kristen Stewart’s Underwater (2020) has become a surprise hit on Netflix after underperforming during its theatrical run. The sci-fi horror flick was made on a $50-80 million budget but earned only $41 million globally.
Underwater accumulated over 9.2 million hours of viewing and over 5.8 million views in its first week on Netflix, earning the sixth spot on the streaming service’s Global Weekly Top 10 (Films) list. Leave the World Behind (in its second week), starring Julia Roberts, is at the top of the list with over 44.9 million views and nearly 106.2 million hours of viewing. Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget stands in second place with nearly 11.9 million views and 20.3 million hours of viewing.
The Kristen Stewart starrer revolves around a group of workers in a drilling facility (Kepler 822) located deep at the bottom of an ocean. Things get ugly after an earthquake destroys their facility and forces the group members to face dangerous creatures. The actress plays the protagonist, Norah Price, in the film.
Underwater performed poorly in terms of both critical and financial reception. The film has a ‘rotten’ score of 48% (based on 221 reviews) on Rotten Tomatoes. In addition, it managed to earn only $41 million worldwide. Helmed by William Eubank, the film stars Kristen Stewart, Jessica Henwick, Vincent Cassel, T. J.
