Kurup is an upcoming thriller that is set for a grand affair. Going by the rumours, it seems Netflix is trying to get in on the ride. Netflix seems to be after the film but the makers are adamant on a theatrical release for the film.

There had already been a lot of reports which suggested that Kurup may take the OTT route. It wouldn’t be the first big name to go down the OTT route, with Suriya and Mohanlal already having direct OTT releases with Soorarai Pottru and Drishyam 2 respectively.
The pandemic brought a lot of uncertainty along with it as many of the titles have fled to OTT platforms due to dire circumstances. Theatres have reopened again but filmmakers are still hesitant as the virus has not vanished completely and people are still scared to get out of their houses.
OTT platforms have been making the most of this opportunity and trying to get their hands on as many buzzy titles as possible. Kurup holding out despite offers from a biggie like Netflix is great news for theatres and their owners, as it will help them get their business back on track.
Kurup is based on the story of Sukumara Kurup who was the mastermind of a gruesome crime that left everyone in shock and awe. Kurup will focus on Sukumara Kurup’s scheme of getting rich by killing a look-alike of himself and claiming his insurance policy, which was a significant amount at the time. It’s been 36 years now, and Kurup has still not been caught by the authorities, and is still one of the most wanted criminals in the Indian state of Kerala.
Kurup arrives in theaters world-wide on May 28th 2021.
