Back in 2018, creators of Netflix’s ‘Dark’ – Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar announced that they will be collaborating on a new series called ‘1899’ with Netflix as part of their overall deal with the streaming giant. ‘Dark’ has been over for sometime and the screenwriting director-producer duo have been working on the script of the film since Feb of 2020. The series is very early in production still, but hear is what we know about the upcoming web series:
1. Plot
As the name suggests, the series will be a period piece, set in the year 1899. The original series will be focused around a mixed group of Europeans who are travelling from London to New York on a migrant steamship. They hope to leave their old life behind and hope to find better opportunities for themselves and their progeny in their future.
Their journey takes an unexpected turn when they see another migrant ship floating adrift at sea enroute. What they had hoped was to reach the promised land but it looks like they might have just stepped into their worst nightmares.
2. Language
Unlike Dark, the series will be in English. And it makes slightly more sense, looking at the series concept.
3. Cast
So far only one cast member has been signed on and that is Cannes Film Festival award winner Emily Beecham. We have been given no information regarding her role, so we will just have to wait and see. Since we are expecting a mixed group of Europeans in the film, we should be seeing diversity in the cast.
4. Production Date
The series was expected to go into production in Feb 2021, with prep having already started by September 2020. But that has been pushed to April 2021, with shooting expected to end by September of that year. Pre-production for the series started on 24th November 2020, which began with a lens test.
5. Episode Related Details
So far, the series has been set for one season with eight episodes. Each episode will be an hour long. The pilot episode will be titled ‘The Ship’.
6. Release Date
Because of the delay in production, we can only expect the series to drop by 2022. Still if the series is half as brilliant as ‘Dark’, we are willing to wait till 2022 for the series to drop.
