The entertainment industry and social media is agog with news that Laxmmi Bomb has been sold to OTT Platform Disney Plus Hotstar for an eye-popping sum. Well, all we can say is — we told you so. Binged.com had informed its readers way back in April that Laxmmi Bomb has been picked up by Disney Plus Hotstar for an undisclosed sum for a direct to digital release.
We had also informed readers of Shakuntala Devi eyeing a direct to digital release, which was proved right later.
Now, it has begun! Wait for the deluge!
A lot of movies are in talks with OTT platforms to release directly on streaming. But all of them have been waiting for someone else to make the first move. The direct release of Gulabo Sitabo on Amazon Prime Video has opened up the way for other big releases to make their announcements.
A number of T-Series produced movies may be headed to OTT instead of the theatres.
According to reports in the media, T-Series is in talks with several streaming platforms to premiere its ready for release movies on OTT instead of in theatres. They are –
1. Amitabh Bachchan-headlined sports drama Jhund, by Sairat director Nagraj Manjule
2. Nikkhil Advani’s Kiara Advani starrer Indoo Ki Jawani
3. Anurag Basu’s multi-starrer Ludo, with Abhishek Bachchan, Rajkummar Rao, Aditya Roy Kapur and Pankaj Tripathi
Besides these three T-Series produced movies, others earmarked for digital release are –
4. Siddharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani’s Shershaah.
5. Jahnvi Kapoor’s Gunjan Saxena
6. Kriti Sanon and Pankaj Tripathi’s Mimi;
7. Sunny Kaushal and Diana Penty’s Shiddat
8. Ekta Kapoor‘s Alankrita Shrivastav directed Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare, starring Bhumi Pednekar and Konkona Sen Sharma
9. Dibakar Banerjee’s much delayed Arjun Kapoor – Parineeti Chopra starrer, Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar
10. Tamil film Naragasooran, starring Arvind Swami and Shriya Saran, and directed by Karthick Naren
11. Another Tamil film Andhaghaaram, a supernatural thriller will have a direct OTT release on Netflix. The streaming date will be announced soon.
12. The Fault In Our Stars remake Dil Bechara, starring Sushant Singh Rajput and Sanjana Sanghi, produced by Fox Star Studios and directed by Mukesh Chhabra
13. Fox Star Studios-produced Lootcase, starring Kunal Khemu and Rasika Dugal and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Tuesdays & Fridays, starring Anmol Thakeria and Jhataleka Malhotra.
Netflix seems to have gained an upper hand in snagging these movies for its platform. However, the decision will be taken only after the respective co-producers of the aforementioned movies are also in agreement with the idea.
All these movies and several more, and Bollywood in general, are increasingly leaning towards the idea of digital releases. The change in perception has happened due to the fact that theatres will reopen much later than when the lockdown is lifted. And even after that, people will not be rushing to cinema houses to watch movies.
Watch this space at Binged.com for further updates on all the movies skipping theatres and releasing directly on digital.
