Leave The World Behind: Julia Roberts Starrer Tops Netflix Streaming Charts

Leave the World Behind, the latest apocalyptic, psychological thriller flick starring Julia Roberts, has gained the top spot on Netflix’s streaming charts. Written and helmed by Sam Esmail, the film revolves around Amanda’s (Roberts) family, who goes on a vacation on Long Island. However, they decide to return to their home after witnessing people around them behaving strangely. Soon, a couple of strangers, George (Mahershala Ali) and his daughter, Ruth (Myha’la), invade their house due to a citywide blackout. As the threat enlarges, both families must figure out how to ensure their survival amidst the potential crisis.

Esmail’s latest directional project has topped Netflix’s Global Top 10 Films list (December 4 – December 10, 2023). The film has received over 41.7 million views on the streaming platform. Jennifer Garner’s Family Switch and Adam Sandler’s Leo are ranked second (18.6 million views) and third (14.2 million views), respectively.

The critical reception towards Leave the World Behind has been mostly positive so far. On Rotten Tomatoes, the latest Julia Roberts starrer has a ‘fresh’ score of 75%, based on 114 certified critics’ reviews. It has received acclaim for its direction, performances, and serious themes. However, its slow pace and storyline have received some criticism.

Julia Roberts is one of those rare female actors in Hollywood whose name is enough to make a film hit. Recent years have not been very kind to Hollywood rom-coms. But the actor’s ‘Ticket to a Paradise’ surprised everyone last year in terms of box office performance. The movie earned over $172 million globally against a production budget of $60 million during its theatrical run. She is best known for her work in Pretty Woman (1990), My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997), Stepmom (1998), Erin Brockovich (2000), Ocean’s Eleven (2001), Eat Pray Love (2010), Wonder (2017), and more.
