Lionsgate Play has just recently launched its streaming services in India and has quite an esteemed collection of titles in its library. It has even brought the critically appreciated ‘Normal People’ to India.
Just having entered the Indian market towards the latter end of 2020 Lionsgate Play is looking to create a stronghold in the Indian market as it realises the vast consumer potential that such a large market brings along with it.
Lionsgate Play in collaboration with Starz has just announced that their first local production for the Indian audience will be the remake of the hit show ‘Casual’. It will star the likes of Prateik Babbar and Lara Dutta in lead roles and will be directed by Kunal Kohli who is also known for his other projects like Fanna and Hum Tum. The story of ‘Casual’ is based on a woman who has just been divorced and is forced to live with her brother and daughter whilst trying to navigate her life.
The heads of both the platforms seem eager to make waves into the Indian market as it has seen a boom in the last couple of years with the younger audience migrating towards these platforms.
The Starzplay streaming platform was launched in 2018 while the Lionsgate Play platform was launched in 2020. Both of the platforms have stated that they have plans to release a slate of original series that will cater to the Indian as well as the South Asian audience shortly as a means to secure rapid growth for their respective platforms.
