SPOILER WARNING!
Well, well, well! It seems like the God of Mischief has become the MCU’s God of Time. The sixth and final episode, Glorious Purpose, shows Loki going to extraordinary lengths to save the ones he loves the most, his friends. In the end, we see him making the ultimate sacrifice.
The second season’s finale truly delivered on its title. After learning how to control his power of time slippage, we see Loki making countless failed attempts to save the Temporal Loom. Eventually, he realises that he cannot save the Loom. He Who Remains further explains to him that the Loom works like a failsafe to protect the Sacred Timeline only. It deletes other unwanted branches to save the Sacred Timeline, further saving itself from getting overloaded. He Who Remains offers him two alternatives: choose the Sacred Timeline (which would have resulted in his friends’ death) or accept the destruction of numerous timelines.
However, our beloved Loki changed the game by adding a third alternative, which included the removal of the Sacred Timeline and He Who Remains from the equation. He literally went beyond the Multiverse and took his place at the core of all the timelines, establishing himself as their caretaker and saving his friends along the way. This was the ‘Glorious Purpose’ Loki was destined to fulfil.
Loki gave the timelines the shape of a tree, which looks pretty similar to Yggdrasil. Do you remember when Thor explained the concept of Yggdrasil to Jane Foster in Thor (2011)? Ah, now you got it! But allow us to explain this scenario to other ‘normal’ people. Yggdrasil, better known as the World Tree, functions as an energy field that establishes connections with all the Ten Realms. And all these connections pass through Midgard (Earth).
But what does it mean for the future of the MCU? Loki’s deed was selfless. He truly made the ultimate sacrifice. He accepted a perpetuity of loneliness in order to save Sylvie and all his other friends, allowing them to live independently in the Multiverse.
