Maanaadu Hits 9.6 On IMDb: Why Is It So Frequent In Kollywood?

By Binged Bureau - Nov 28, 2021 @ 12:11 pm

Maanaadu is a science fiction Tamil film. Although science fiction is very rare in India, thankfully our filmmakers are experimenting with it. It is directed by Venkat Prabhu and has Silambarasan, SJ Suryah and Kalyani Priyadarshan in the lead role.

It is released very recently on 25th November and has taken the country by storm. People are appreciating the film and critics are singing praises for this unconventional and out of the box concept in the Tamil industry.

With over 6600 ratings, Maanaadu is maintaining a rating of 9.5 on IMDb. This is exceptionally great because the recent film from the Tamil industry Jai Bhim is also maintaining the same 9.5 points on IMDb.

Last year, Soorarai Pottru also achieved 9.5 on IMDb but currently, it is at 9.1. The big question is, how is the Tamil industry consistently giving over 9 ratings on IMDb which is considered incredibly tough?

Because even The Shawshank Redemption is on 9.2. Mind you, that it is the highest-rated English movie on IMDb. If someone says that Maanaadu or Jai Bhim has a higher rating than The Shawshank Redemption then it is true. But there is a catch that must not go unnoticed.

The Shawshank Redemption is maintaining 9.2 after a huge 2.5 million ratings. So applies to the second-highest rated English movie, The Godfather, which is maintaining 9.2 after 1.7 million ratings.

But, Jai Bhim has only 142K ratings as of now that is nowhere close to The Shawshank Redemption or even The Godfather. There can be multiple reasons for the same. Quite obviously even Indian films do not have a pan India viewership due to the huge linguistic diversity. Thanks to films like Bahubali and RRR, we are finally seeing films with a pan India viewership.

The same applies to the southern part of India, where Bollywood films are nowhere to be heard of. On the other hand, English films have a viewership spread all across the globe. It gives them a huge advantage because people from all over the world celebrate their cinema. Unlike India, where films that are celebrated all over India can be counted on fingers.

Bollywood, these days is not producing the great films that it used to do. A major number of films are highly cliched and lack innovation. The South Indian industry is not like that. They experiment with cinema and produce some masterpieces. That is indeed praiseworthy and also the reason for the appreciation it gets.

Because Bollywood is far away from producing films that the South Indian industry is currently doing. They might be the reason why Kollywood is consistently giving such great ratings on IMDb.
