‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ Prequel ‘Furiosa’ Set For Cannes 2024 Premiere

It’s been eight years since George Miller’s post-apocalyptic action flick ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ hit the big screen. The film featured Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron in the lead roles, and it won many accolades including six Oscar Awards. The movie is regarded by many as one of the best action films ever made. So, the curiosity quotient around its spin-off prequel film ‘Furiosa’ is naturally high. The movie is slated for a theatrical release on 24th May 2024.

However, as per the latest update, the makers are planning to initially release the film at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival next year and they would be expecting Furiosa’s world premiere to replicate the success of ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’, which came out in 2015. However, as of now, an official confirmation regarding the same is still awaited.

‘Furiosa’ features ‘Last Night in Soho’ actress Anya Taylor-Joy as the younger version of Imperator Furiosa, a role which was essayed by Charlize Theron in ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’. The prequel ostensibly explores the early years and serves as an origin story of the daredevil warrior before she joined forces with Mad Max. In an interesting casting choice, ‘Furiosa’ also features ‘Thor’ actor Chris Hemsworth as the film’s main villain.

Geroge Miller, who had also helmed the cult Mad Max films starring Mel Gibson in the 1970s / 80s, had also premiered the critically acclaimed romantic drama movie ‘Three Thousand of Longing’ at last year’s Cannes where it also received a standing ovation by the festival crowd. We just wish that George Miller showcases ‘Furiosa’ at Cannes 2024 in the competition segment because it’s potentially a strong contender for its top prize Palme d’Or, which ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ couldn’t win because it surprisingly premiered out of competition at that time.
