George Miller has officially announced the production plans for Warner Bros. Pictures’ upcoming ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ spin-off film – ‘Furiosa’. The prequel movie will go into production in June and it will be Australia’s largest film production to date. The film will also receive financial incentives from federal and state governments to secure its production within the country. Miller, who is big on practical effects as seen in his film, the aforementioned ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’, the writer-director has confirmed that his production team has already built the necessary equipment and special cars needed for the stunt sequences required in this upcoming movie.
‘Mad Max: Fury Road‘ was George Miller’s fourth film in his ‘Mad Max’ series. The previous trilogy was made in the 70s and 80s and featured Mel Gibson as the titular star of the films series. But in the 2015 film, the actor was deemed too old to play his previous role. Tom Hardy was his replacement and the movie went on to do very well – both in the box office and among critics alike.
But unlike the previous films, Max wasn’t the star of the movie, instead, it was in the form of Charlize Theron’s Furiosa. Theron’s brilliant portrayal of the one-armed “Imperator” made her even more interesting than Hardy’s portrayal of Max (which was also good). So much so, that months after the film’s release, Miller announced that he is making a prequel film about Furiosa and here we are.
Anya Taylor-Joy will portray a much younger Furiosa in this movie and just like her previous role in the brilliant TV series ‘The Queen’s Gambit’, she will portray Furiosa in different stages of her life. Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II are attached to the project as well, in unspecified roles. Hemsworth expressed his delight for the film’s upcoming shoot in Australia and has called it his “biggest pinch-myself moment”.
