After Minnal Murali’s super success in the Superhero genre, Malayalam Cinema is back with its first time travel based fantasy comedy – ‘Maha Veeryar‘. ‘Maha Veeryar’, moulded as a multistarrer stars Nivin Pauly and Asif Ali in lead roles. The film releases on 21st July, 2022. The makers dropped the official trailer of the biggie some time ago.
The trailer opens with a courtroom dialogue in the background that cuts to a courtroom scene featuring Lalu Alex, Mallika Sukumaran and Siddique. The prosecution argues against superstitions and blind faith. Nivin Pauly is dressed as a saint who narrates the case of a Medieval era kingdom that got ruined when they questioned the existence of God. What follows is a brief introduction of the world/kingdom of Asif Ali and Lal. We are then shown the dichotomy of Democracy v/s Monarchy as the modern era court evaluates and gives judgement on the medieval era-old case. Maha Veeryar clearly appears more than just a time-travel theme based movie. It also appears to be a satire on blind faith and superstitions prevalent even today.
Written and Directed by Abrid Shine, this fantasy themed biggie has faced way too many road-blocks until it locked a release date. Maha Veeryar one of the most anticipated malayalam movies of the year owing to the cryptic tone of its promotional materials and quirky genre-mixes. Maha Veeryar is the third collaboration between Nivin Pauly and Abrid Shine as actor-director duo. The duo previously collaborated in films like 1983 (2014) and Action Hero Biju (2016). Abrid Shine’s previous directorial The Kung Fu Master (2020) however had a dismal box office performance. Nivin Pauly is joined by Asif Ali, Lal, Shanvi Srivastava and Siddique in other major roles in Maha Veeryar.
From the trailer, teaser and promotional posters, Not only is the film looking promising because of its focus on crowd favourite genres and sub-genres like time travel, fantasy, period drama, comedy and court-room drama, the film also has an emotional core.
