The entertainment world has been left shaken and stirred by content powerhouse Warner Bros’ decision to release its tent pole movie Wonder Woman 1984 as a hybrid release. This means the film will release on both OTT — HBO Max in this case — as well as in theatres wherever possible. The tough though revolutionary decision taken by Warner Bros has inspired the makers of Coolie No. 1, who is now exploring the possibility of releasing the upcoming movie along similar lines.
As per reports in the media, Vashu Bhagnani and David Dhawan, co-producers of Coolie No. 1, are contemplating the simultaneous release of Coolie No. 1 on single screen theatres along with Amazon Prime Video, which has bought the direct to digital streaming rights of the movie. Multiplex owners had, at the time of the release of Laxmii itself, declined any interest in screening a film that will simultaneously release directly on any streaming platform. But single screen owners are certainly interested in screening Coolie No. 1.
The movie has the prospect of doing good business in tier II and tier III towns if released in single-screen theatres. Its slapstick comedy, along with Varun Dhawan’s star appeal, is a definite crowd puller for smaller towns. It is a remake of the 1990s Govinda – Karisma Kapoor hit of the same name. The new iteration of Coolie No. 1 has Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan in the lead.
Amazon Prime Video is also agreeable with the idea of releasing the film in single-screen theatres. The move will also act as a counter to the illegal airing of pirated copies of films in theatres in smaller towns, as happened recently with Laxmii.
No final decision has been taken yet about simultaneously releasing Coolie No. 1 in theatres and on OTT. Stay tuned to Binged.com for further details on the film and its release.
