Post COVID era in the entertainment industry has been dominated by OTT. What was once only an optional luxury became a thing of every household. So what is it with OTT? The platforms are giving away an insane sumss of money to producers to buy the movies for direct to digital. Other than Netflix, no other OTT platform is actively making original films. But the audience loves such movies on OTT irrespective of the fact that it is an OTT original or direct to OTT.
As a result, other platforms prefer to buy movies from producers and directly stream themem on OTT instead of going to the theaters and then taking an OTT route.
In an recent interview, Malayalam filmmaker Nadirsha shared some astonishing data about the offers They had received from the OTT players.
Keshu Ee Veedinte Nadhan is the biggest business deal in Dileep’s career till date. The deal was for 30cr, and Hotstar gave them 37cr including GST.
Eesho had an expense of 4cr 40 lakh, but Sony bought the movie for 10 crore (direct OTT). Satellite rights were sold to a different channel, so there was extra profit.
So, you can imagine how safe it is for producers to just sell their movies to OTT platforms. We do realize that it will come at the cost of hampering the cinema business but change is the only constant. OTT seems to be getting more and more powerful.
