Mollywood films are making social awareness and everyday lifestyle their main subject to target film audiences and it seems to be working, as seen in the past decade. Operation Java is one such film, which is based on multiple real life cases which are rarely heard off. The movie was expected to release last year, but due to the coronavirus pandemic outbreak, the government initiated a nation-wide lockdown (which most of us reading this will already know) and here we are. And despite the central government allowing films to be released for viewing from October onwards, Kerala only allowed theaters to be opened by the first week of January 2021. During this time, the producers of Operation Java had to hold off multiple aspiring OTT companies from streaming their movie.
Back in June, Operation Java’s writer and director Tharun Moorthy was asked why the film will not go to OTT with no end in sight to the lockdown. The director had replied that in his initial discussions with the film producers, they were thinking about an OTT release. But when the producers asked Tharun straight up – where did he want the film to be released, Tharun said that he wanted the film to be watched in the theaters.
And Tarun’s reply was backed by the cast and crew who all want the film to be viewed in theaters. Tarun also had another reason for releasing Operation Java in theaters – the ease of accessibility of the film for the Malayali audience. The movie talks about unheard of crimes that happen within the state (and all over the country), and it needs to be seen by as many people as possible, so that they can be aware of this issue.
Operation Java follows a group of police officers as they investigate one of the biggest cyber crimes within the country. These kinds of crimes are still prevalent to this day, albeit in smaller numbers, so it is important to be aware about this social and public issue.
Operation Java is expected to release in theaters next week, on 12th February 2021. Check out the trailer for the crime thriller, which released a few days ago, down below:
