Rajinikanth’s much anticipated ‘Jailer’ caused a controversy when a Malayalam filmmaker accused distributors of not giving his film any screens. Sakkil Madathil’s ‘Jailer’ starring Dhyan Sreenivasan does not just share the same title with Rajinikanth’s big budget actioner, it also shared the same release date.
The movie was not getting any screens even in Kerala due to the huge buzz of the Tamil ‘Jailer’ movie. Rajinikanth’s huge fan base is not a distant past, but it is very much present and it is evident in the hype for the movie. Sakkil Madathil and the producers of Jailer (Malayalam) have decided to not take a risk and shift the release date to the 18th of August.
The Malayalam movie has now been postponed to be released on 18 and it will have a 8 day gap from the Tamil movie. Though it does not look like it is going to be a great help to the business of the movie. Among audiences too, the similar name of the movies might create confusion and Rajinikanth will easily run more that one week and Sakkil’s Jailer has very little chances of survival. But it will at least have proper screens all over Kerala.
It was a good decision to change the release date and the chances for the movie are better than before now. The movie is a small budget one that tells the story of a jailer who lives with 5 criminals and decides to do an experiment with them. On the other hand, Rajini’s Jailer is a high powered action entertainer.
