A few days back, Vetrimaaran’s latest directorial outing ‘Viduthalai Part 1’ made its way to the coveted international list of the top 50 movies on Auckland-based movies-centric social platform Letterboxd (from the year 2023).
And now, yet another Indian film has made us proud as it has cracked the Letterboxd top 50 narrative feature films list (excluding documentaries). We are talking about the survival thriller Malayalam movie ‘2018’, which has cracked the Letterboxd list and is currently placed on Rank 39.
Set against the backdrop of the 2018 Kerala floods, ‘2018’ revolves around a group of people from different walks of life and how the devastating floods suddenly upturned their lives. It also focuses on the incredible efforts made by the people including the fishermen and the local people, in order to overcome the catastrophic calamity.
Directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, the movie features Tovino Thomas, Kunchacko Boban, Asif Ali, Vineeth Srinivasan, Aparna Balamurli, Kalaiyarasan, Indrans, and Lal in important roles.
Since its theatrical release on 5th May, ‘2018’ has grossed over Rs.100 crore at the box office globally. Moreover, the movie has been receiving some terrific reviews from the critics and is being admired by the audiences as well. ‘2018’ has got a highly impressive appreciation score of 8.6/10 on movie ticketing portal BookMyShow and an IMDb user rating of 9/10.
The Letterboxd top 50 narrative films list 2023 has been topped by the romantic drama movie ‘Past Lives’ (Rank 1) followed by James Gunn’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3’ (Rank 2) and Keanu Reeves’ blockbuster action extravaganza ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ (Rank 6). Besides ‘2018’, the two other Indian films on the said Letterboxd top 50 list are ‘Viduthalai Part-1’ (Rank 9) and ‘Vaalvi’ (Rank 41).
