Our world was hit by the worst pandemic a few months ago and although everything came at a halt, film festivals, theatres, film releases shut, it didn’t for the ‘Euphoria’ creator Sam Levinson. He secretly shot a film during the pandemic called “Malcolm and Marie” starring Zendaya (Euphoria, The Greatest Showman) and John David Washington (BlacKkKlansman). The film has already completed production.
Similar to this, Pablo Larrain made a film during the pandemic with 16 other filmmakers streaming on Netflix called “Homemade”.
While nothing has been revealed regarding the story, it is to be known that it has similar echoes to “Marriage Story” by Noah Baumbach when it comes to themes and our current world situation.
The film was shot June 17th – July 2nd. At the Caterpillar House which is known to be an environmentally conscious location. The production worked with a team of doctors all under Covid 19 safety protocol and kept the team small so everyone could multitask.
Sam Levinson worked with his wife Ashley (producer of Bombshell, Queen and Slim), producer Kevin Turen. Alongside were Marcell Rév as the DP and Michael Grasley as production designer. The set involved not more than 12 people every day. The actors and crew were quarantined whereas the production designer, grips, set dressers had separate areas to socially distance. Temperature checks were done both when starting and ending the day. Sets were pre arranged and the director would check everything on video call in advance. Masks and protective gear was made available and thorough sensitization of every surface was done. Often meetings were held on video conferences.
So far no details on when the film will release has been made. Nevertheless we look forward to watching “Malcolm and Marie” soon.
