Mani Ratnam’s ‘Ponniyin Selvan 2’ Early Reviews Are Out

Mani Ratnam’s epic historical action-adventure movie ‘Ponniyin Selvan 2’ aka ‘PS-2’ is out in theatres worldwide from today. A sequel to PS-1, the star-studded film is based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s 1955 novel of the same name and chronicles the account of the early days of Arulmozhi Varman, who later became the great Chola emperor Rajaraja Chola I.

Now, let’s see what some of the netizens, film enthusiasts, and movie buffs are saying about the film as per some early reviews which have already started pouring in.

Until now, a positive / decent word of mouth from some of the early feedback from the film’s US premiere was observed. However, some viewers remarked that ‘Ponniyin Selvan 2’, like its predecessor, suffers from slow pace. So, it might need some patient viewing by the audience. It needs to be kept in mind that there is a difference between a ‘slow’ film and a ‘boring’ film.

Besides the superb production values and performances seen in ‘Ponniyin Selvan 2’, another aspect which many fans are agreeing upon is the way veteran filmmaker Mani Ratnam has handled the film’s direction and the spot-on music given by musical maestro A.R. Rahman.

Another highlight about ‘Ponniyin Selvan 2’ which is being talked about by netizens is the brilliant face-off between the characters of Karikalan and Nandini, played by Vikram and Aishwarya Rai, respectively.

Some of the film enthusiasts opined that ‘Ponniyin Selvan 2’ has turned out to be better than the first film ‘PS-1’. While some others have even compared ‘PS-2’ with S.S Rajamouli’s ‘Baahubali’ and found the former to be superior, although it won’t be prudent to compare these two very different films. Some fans have also called ‘Ponniyin Selvan 2’ as the pride of Indian cinema.

Now that ‘Ponniyin Selvan 2’ has hit the big screens today, it remains to be seen what sort of appreciation and feedback the massively mounted film gets from the audiences and critics in the longer term. After completing its theatrical run, ‘PS-2’ is expected to stream on the Amazon Prime Video OTT in the month of June.
