If you thought A24 makes only indie horror films and thrillers, you are absolutely wrong. The studio released its official trailer for “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On” on tuesday and it is oh-so-cute. This is the first feature-length mockumentary about a tiny shell and it’s not-so-tiny personality.
The film follows Marcel the Shell on a mission to find his family. He currently lives with his grandmother Connie and their pet lint, Alan who were once part of a thriving community of shells, but have been cocooned to a lonely life after surviving a mysterious tragedy.
“It’s pretty much common knowledge that it takes at least 20 shells to have a community,” Marcel says in the trailer. Marcel can’t help but wonder where his big sprawling family is — if in case they’re still alive. So, Marcel decides to take on the world and set out on a journey to find the family he desires.
“Marcel the Shell with Shoes On,” is directed by Dean Fleischer Camp who is also behind the creation of character through short films and children’s books. Jenny Slate voices the iconic seashell once again after 2010. Isabella Rossellini, with Rosa Salazar, Thomas Mann, and Lesley Stahl also co-star in the film. A24 has allocated a June (24th) release date for the film.
