Margot Robbie’s future in James Gunn’s DCU looks foggy. The Barbie actress has played the iconic DC character, Harley Quinn, in three different DCEU entries. Her character was romantically involved with Jared Leto’s Joker and later joined the famous Suicide Squad in the 2016 David Ayer directional. After that, we witnessed her in Birds of Prey (2020) and Gunn’s Suicide Squad reboot (2021). Robbie’s last project as Harley Quinn made everyone believe that she would be one of the first individuals to get chosen by Gunn for the DCU. Now, things are not looking good for the Barbie actress.
At present, Robbie’s Harley Quinn is not one of the confirmed canon characters in the DCU. This scenario leaves the Australian actress’ future in the DCU hanging in the balance.
Ayer’s Suicide Squad was one hell of a mess. However, critics and viewers welcomed Robbie as Joker’s psychotic partner. Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey was only good in pieces, but Robbie’s charismatic take on Harley Quinn saved the overall film. Then, we witnessed the real anti-hero persona of her DC character in Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. All these movies displayed Harley’s evolution in the DCEU, making her undoubtedly one of the best things about the superhero franchise.
Before becoming the creative head at DC Studios, James Gunn expressed his desire to work with Margot Robbie again after The Suicide Squad’s release in 2021. However, things have changed now. Gunn has new plans and characters for his new DC franchise. His next project, the Creature Commandos animated series, will officially commence the DCU. It will come out in 2024. On the other hand, the DCEU will conclude with ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’. It means Robbie has no chance of making a return to the DCEU. But she could enter Gunn’s DCU.
Robbie is likely to get an entry to the DCU, considering Barbie’s sensational success at the global box office and her outstanding performances in the DCEU. She could return as Harley Quinn in the upcoming Max’s Waller series, based on Amanda Waller. Harley and the rest of The Suicide Squad openly disobeyed Waller’s orders and faced Starro to protect people in Gunn’s 2021 film. And all of them will suffer serious consequences for their collective decision in future. This scenario makes ‘Waller’ a perfect platform for Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn to arrive in the DCU. Stay tuned for more updates.
