While many of us are still unsure whether we need a Harry Potter series, Mark Rylance is reportedly being considered for the role of Albus Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts and the founder of the Order of the Phoenix. Apart from Dumbledore’s role, Warner Bros. is also looking for actors for other key adult characters from the franchise.
According to sources, Warner Bros. is interested in working with Rylance but has not yet begun formal negotiations with the Oscar-winning actor, best known for his work in Bridge of Spies, The BFG, Dunkirk, Ready Player One, The Trial of the Chicago 7, and Bones and All. Representatives of the actor are yet to confirm the news.
If all goes well, Rylance will become the fourth actor to portray the iconic character in a live-action Wizarding World project, following Richard Harris (in The Philosopher’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets), Michael Gambon, who played the role in the rest of the original movies starring Daniel Radcliffe as the titular character, and Jude Law from the Fantastic Beasts film series.
The upcoming series, announced back in 2023, will explore J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter novels more extensively than the movies. The project has entered the pre-production stage and is set to be released in 2026. Warner Bros. has begun searching for the right actors for the leading trio: Harry, Ron, and Hermione. While many fans have criticised the studio’s decision to develop an HP series, some have welcomed this decision with open arms.
In September 2024, Gary Oldman, who played Sirius Black in the original movies, expressed his desire to play Dumbledore in an interview with IndieWire: “Maybe in a few years, I could do Dumbledore.” Stay tuned for more updates.
