Don Cheadle‘s ‘Armor Wars’ was one of the Disney+ series fans were excited for since it was revealed at the recent D23 Expo. With the character not being fleshed out well enough in the movies, fans were excited to see Rhodey aka War Machine having more screen time in the supposedly 6-episodes series. Now, in a huge update, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that the series is now being envisioned into a feature film at Marvel.
Reportedly, Marvel was committed to getting the story told the right way and in that process realized that a feature was better suited for the project. Like all Marvel movies, Armor Wars is set to release in theatres before having a digital release.
‘Armor Wars’ is reportedly set around the story of what happens when the highly advanced technology of Iron Man falls into the wrong hands. This also meant fans could get to see the different kinds of suits in the MCU that they had till now been limited to the comics hence adding to the buzz around the project.
Interestingly, this is not the first time Marvel has pulled a UNO Reverse card on the announced title’s format. The hit series ‘Hawkeye’ was initially envisioned as a feature film before the executive team at the studio decided to develop it into a Disney+ series. Now, looking back at the Black Widow debacle, it was the right decision and it appears not all of the avengers need a feature film if there is no story and script to support them.
War Machine has been a fan favorite since his first appearance in ‘Iron Man’. The character was recast for Iron Man 2 and that is when Cheadle came into the MCU playing Rhodey. He will be next reprising his role in the MCU series Secret Invasion alongside Samuel L Jackson which is set to release in 2023.
Yassir Lester, who acted as head writer on the series, will remain a part of the project. This move from the studios however will invariably lead to the project being pushed back further in the MCU’s release timeline.
