In a significant departure from the norm for Marvel Studios, we now know that the content giant will premiere all episodes of its upcoming Disney Plus series ‘Echo’ at one go. All five episodes of the series will premiere on one single day on Disney Plus Hotstar in India, Disney Plus worldwide and also on Hulu in the US. The release dates and timings for the 5-episode ‘Echo’ are 6 pm PT on 10th January, 2024 on Disney Plus and Hulu. This works out to 7:30 am on 11th January, 2024 on Disney Plus Hotstar in India.
For the longest time, Marvel has been releasing all its Disney Plus TV shows in the one-episode per week release format. From Wanda Vision to Loki to Hawkeye to Moonknight, to every other Marvel series ever released on Disney Plus, all have followed the one episode per week release strategy until now. But now, Marvel Studios has decided to change tactic with its next Disney Plus TV series, ‘Echo’.
This makes us wonder what prompted Marvel Studios and Disney Plus to move away from its release strategy, and decide to release all episodes of Echo in the binge-watch format. Is it the ignominious failure of their ambitious Secret Invasion – a show that received much criticism and a devastating fall in viewership by the time the final episode came around for release on Disney Plus?
Of course, Marvel had the redeeming Loki to offset the failure of Secret Invasion somewhat. But Echo might prove to be a difficult proposition to sustain audience interest week after week, what with its relatively new main character in Maya Lopez aka Echo, and lack of any other popular characters in the series.
All of the above may have prompted Marvel Studios and Disney Plus to chuck the weekly episode release format and go in for an all-episodes at once release strategy for Echo. For those who don’t know, Echo was introduced to audiences in the Hawkeye series on Disney Plus, back in 2021.
Echo will focus on the origin story of Maya Lopez, whose ruthless behavior in New York City catches up with her in her hometown; she must face her past, reconnect with her Native American roots and embrace the meaning of family and community. The series is created by Marion Dayre.
Alaqua Cox reprises her role as Maya Lopez / Echo from Hawkeye. Chaske Spencer, Tantoo Cardinal, Devery Jacobs, Zahn McClarnon, Cody Lightning, Graham Greene, Vincent D’Onofrio, and Charlie Cox are also slated to appear in Echo in pivotal roles, the latter two in their MCU roles of Kingpin and Daredevil, respectively.
