The first episode of Eyes of Wakanda, an upcoming animated series from Marvel that expands on the Black Panther story, debuted during a recent panel at the Annecy Animation Festival. Series director Todd Harris spoke in detail about the show and revealed that one underrated Marvel superhero will return to the MCU.
Harris also disclosed that the series follows an “anthology-adjacent” format. He previously served as a story artist for Black Panther (2018) and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022).
As for the returning superhero, Harris revealed that Iron Fist will make a grand return in Eyes of Wakanda. In addition to Iron Fist, other familiar Marvel characters will also make special appearances in the series. Harris addressed the reveal by saying:
“There will be an Iron Fist in here, and not the Iron Fist you expect.”
Episode 1 of Eyes of Wakanda is set in 1260 BC and focuses on Noni (Winnie Harlow), a disgraced former Dora Milaje and Wakandan secret agent, and her mission to track down a man known as “Lion” (Cress Williams).
Lion, a former member of the Wakandan guard, has gone rogue and now leads a pirate crew. He has stolen Wakandan technology to establish his own kingdom. Noni tracks him to Crete, where Lion’s diverse group of international fighters is plundering a town and enslaving its inhabitants.
Eyes of Wakanda is animated by Axis Animation Studio in a graphic 3D style featuring exaggerated character designs and 2D visual effects. Each episode will be approximately 30 minutes long. The show will explore different historical periods, focusing on various stolen artifacts. Despite the shifting timelines, a thread of continuity will tie the series together, as the consequences of Lion’s actions ripple across eras. Stay tuned for more updates.
