The end of November and the start of December emerged as a time of forging partnerships, with many big names seeking allies for the road ahead. In this period, the indie production company A24 secured a multi-year deal with WBD for its entire slate.
HBO and A24, not entirely unfamiliar to each other, are bringing over 100 A24 films—including recent releases such as Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla” and Nicolas Cage’s “Dream Scenario,” along with older titles like “The Green Knight”—to HBO, Max, and Cinemax.
This collaboration expands on their existing partnership, which includes TV shows like “The Idol” and “Euphoria,” making A24’s entire movie library available to a broader audience.
The deal is also a Pay 1 output deal, allowing the films, after exhausting their theatrical run, to be exclusively available on the WBD-owned platform for a set window.
Appealing to a broader audience, streaming A24 films on HBO, Max, and Cinemax will eventually give these films more exposure, having a bigger impact on the company.
Moreover, for WBD, discovery is a significant benefit. With such deals, not only will it boost their numbers, but in terms of cost-cutting, these types of arrangements are more efficient, as they eliminate the hassle of creating a film from scratch.
