The Marvel Cinematic Universe is one of Hollywood’s most successful (both critically and financially) media franchises. Since its inception in 2008, the franchise has delivered hit projects consistently. However, things are not looking very pleasant for the franchise nowadays. Given Jonathan Majors’ removal, Daredevil: Born Again’s creative overhaul, and the bombing (both critically and financially) of some key projects, it is safe to say that the MCU is in troubled waters. And it seems like there is no end to the franchise’s growing list of woes. The MCU has received not one but multiple Razzie nominations for the first time in its 16-year-old history, thanks to Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
The 31st film of the MCU has earned four Razzie nominations this year. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has been nominated for Worst Supporting Actor, Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-Off or Sequel, and Worst Director. Hollywood veterans Michael Douglas and Bill Murray have been nominated in the first category. The film’s helmer, Peyton Reed, has been nominated for Worst Director.
Fans had high expectations from Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania as it commenced MCU’s Phase Five. Many believed it would make them forget about all the wrongdoings of Phase Four. Well, they were clearly wrong. Quantumania had a few good elements, such as Majors’ menacing performance and excellent chemistry among the leading trio, consisting of Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, and Kathryn Newton. However, it also suffered from numerous noticeable flaws, such as a poor storyline, a change of tone from previous Ant-Man flicks, bad CGI, drab-looking action, horrible characterisation of M.O.D.O.K, and more.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania also launched Kang the Conqueror in the MCU. Kang was supposed to be the next big villain after Thanos in The Multiverse Saga. But fans did not like how Majors’ Kang was treated in the film. Yes, he looked menacing. But fans hated how quickly he died in the film. Like Thanos, many expected Kang to be a recurring villain in the franchise. All these factors led to the film’s first-ever Razzie nominations. Stay tuned for more updates.
