Plastic doesn’t decompose, and that’s the same about the Plastic Girls; their hype isn’t dying down as well. In terms of the box office, the film is in a tough fight with The Beekeeper. But, as they are oscillating between the top 2 spots, the limited release is causing some dissatisfaction among global fans.
So, let’s dive deep, shall we?
Again, in terms of ratings, a 6.3 IMDb and 70% on Rotten Tomatoes don’t really scream massive success, but with a budget of $35M, it has already grossed $52M, and that too just in the USA. So, expect a $70M run in the domestic market.
But the Plastic Girls are missing from a plethora of countries, at least on a mass level. And countries like India, though for a Hollywood movie like this, haven’t really shown interest. The first one grossed no more than $60K; the second one is yet to open the innings.
One thing that we need to keep in mind is that 20 years have passed since the original was released, and in these 20 years, generations have changed massively, resulting in a change in the taste of films as well.
So, OTT comes out as the only option to stream it, but as of now, there is no official news. But being a Paramount distribution, there can be some assumptions. Expect it to stream on Prime Video as they have access to most of the big titles.
Though most of the Paramount Plus content is not available on JioCinema, you can count that in as well. And as most of its content has a 45-day window, expect an end February release or the start of March.
But again, Asteroid City sort of crushed the expectations in terms of the OTT release as it came to Indian theatres very late. So, don’t rule that possibility down as well.
