Amazon Prime’s latest Anthology film ‘Putham Puthu Kalai’ is a feature which has been split into five short films. All five anthology films titled ‘Avarum Naanum/Avalum Naanum’, ‘Ilamai Idho Idho’, ‘Coffee’, ‘Anyone?’, ‘Reunion and Miracle’, originated from the mind of a single writer Reshma Ghatala. Each short film has been directed by five different Tamil directors and here is a short introduction behind the esteemed quintet:
1. Sudha Kongara
This Indian Film Director predominantly works in Tamil Films. She worked as Mani Ratnam’s Associate Director for 7 years. She wrote a screenplay for the 2002 Indo-American project ‘Mitr, My Friend’, which was acclaimed director Revathi’s directorial debut. The film was noted for it’s all-women crew, and received many accolades for it’s subject matter.
2. Gautham Menon
Known as GVM in the South-Indian Film Industry, this actor-screenwriter-director predominantly worked in Tamil Film Industry for over two decades. Many of his films have received critical acclaim especially his romantic movies ‘Minnale’ (2001), ‘Vaaranam Aayiram’ (2008), ‘Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa’ (2010), as well as his thrillers ‘Kaakha Kaakha’ (2003), ‘Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu’ (2006), and ‘Yennai Arindhaal’ (2015).
3. Suhasini Mani Ratnam
This individual has done extensive work for over three decades in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu and Kannada films, primarily as an actor. This year will be her 40th year working in films, and it is brilliant that this will be her third film of her career which she will be directing. This actress has put on some remarkable performances on screen and we can’t wait to see her direct and act in this anthology film.
4. Rajiv Menon
This Malayali director-cinematographer has worked in the film industry for over two decades. He broke through as a cinematographer in Mani Ratnam’s ‘Bombay’ (1994). Apart from films, Rajiv is a leading director in the Indian advertisement field and he runs a company which provides equipment for documentary, shorts films and cinemas.
5. Karthik Subbaraj
This Tamil director and cinematographer broke big when his debut collaboration with actor VIjay Sethupathi, ‘Pizza’ broke into the big screen to multiple accolades. Hailing from a family who has worked in the film industry before him, this relatively young director has made his mark in the South-Indian entertainment business in a short period of time. He is one of the new generation of filmmakers who has been creating waves in Tamil cinema through his directing style.
