Amar Singh Chamkila has completed its first full-week run. The movie opened to extremely positive reviews and the promotions were also top notch. And why not?
The film has names as big as Imtiaz Ali, AR Rahman, Irshad Kamil, Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra.
It revolves around the life of a singer who is the most influential entertainment superstar in the history of the Punjabi music industry.
So what has been the overall response so far?
Umm, not bad. But you know that not bad is not equal to good.
What are the numbers saying?
If you see for yourself then Chamkila was the 5th most watched non-English movie on Netflix last week. 5th is not a bad position at all, but, the next thing you should be checking is the number of hours it was streamed for. Sadly, the numbers are not very good. For a film of Chamkila’s magnitude and greatness, merely 7000K hours of views are not satisfactory at all.
We can very well assume that the film failed to have a grip in South India, which became a reason behind its mediocre views.
But, the audience must be blamed for it. Chamkila is indeed an extremely beautiful film that deserves love. But, it is following the classic case of Imtiaz Ali films that receive love, but when someone stumbles upon them much later calling them “underrated gems”.
