Okay guys, it is finally happening. Hideo Kojima’s action-adventure stealth game ‘Metal Gear Solid’ is going into development for the big screen. The long awaited game adaptation gained some traction recently, when Sony Pictures announced its development with Jordan Vogt-Robert coming on board to direct. Now various sources have reported that Oscar Isaac is attached to the project and what’s more, he is expected to play the protagonist – the no-nonsense badass “Snake”.
To those who haven’t heard of ‘Metal Gear Solid’, it is a well known game franchise which was published by Konami. The game was released way back in 1998 (over 20 years ago) for Playstation, but has gone on to develop its other games in the franchise for vastly different gaming consoles as well as for PC. The game won multiple accolades for its storytelling style and cinematic feel; some would say that for this reason the movie adaptation was inevitable.
‘Metal Gear Solid’ series follows Naked Snake (Snake for short), an operative working for the fictional “Force Operation X” (FOX) unit of the CIA during the Cold War. The game series depicts him rising through the ranks within the FOXHOUND (FOX becomes a renegade special forces unit). Eventually Snake takes on the head of this unit, after the unit takes a completely different turn, in accordance to their creed.
Obviously many other things have to still be hashed out, but Isaac has a busy schedule ahead of him. Because of Covid-19, multiple productions involving him (which were supposed to happen during lockdown) are being fast tracked into production. Isaac has already worked in the ’Star Wars’ franchise and so he has experience but seeing the amount of projects he is currently committed to, we are expecting ‘Metal Gear Solid’ to go into production only by late 2021 or early 2022.
He is currently working with Jessica Chastain in HBO’s ‘Scenes From a Marriage’ and then will go on to portray the titular character in the Marvel Superhero Web Series ‘MoonKnight’ for Disney+. Isaac will also appear in the much anticipated reboot of ‘Dune’ and Paul Schrader’s ‘The Card Encounter’. He is also going to produce and star in the ‘Ex Machina’ comic book adaptation which will be retitled to ‘The Great Machine’ and will also star in Barry Levinson’s ‘Francis and The Godfather’, alongside Jake Gyllenhall. This busy schedule means ‘Metal Gear Solid’ fans will have to wait a bit before they can get a first look of their new “Snake”.
