Filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have declared that Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will conclude the Miles Morales trilogy. Sony’s latest animated feature has received critical acclaim and is performing brilliantly at the global box office. Fans have to wait nearly nine months to witness the epic conclusion of the animated trilogy. If Beyond the Spider-Verse manages to do everything perfectly, then the trilogy may go down as one of the greatest feature trilogies in Hollywood.
The trilogy kicked off with Into the Spider-Verse (2018), which turned out to be a sleeper hit as many believed that the film would not succeed at the box office. But it overcame all obstacles and established itself as one of the greatest animated flicks ever. Four years later, we got Across the Spider-Verse. The sequel proves that the first film was not just a fluke. It was a dedicated effort from Lord and Miller and the rest of the production team. Both Miles Morales projects have performed exceptionally well in terms of music, animation, voice performances, storylines, and humour.
Expectations with Beyond the Spider-Verse have skyrocketed, considering the jaw-dropping cliffhanger ending of Across the Spider-Verse (which we will not spoil for you).
In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller spoke openly about Beyond the Spider-Verse. They confirmed that the first two entries were a part of the Miles Morales trilogy, and this trilogy will culminate with Beyond the Spider-Verse.
“It is the end of the Miles Morales trilogy and this whole thing is like working towards that. But this obviously has its own complete film with a beginning, middle and end, and Miles starts in one place and ends in another, and all the characters have an arc in this film. But that’s it for us,” Miller said.
Ending the Miles Morales arc with Beyond the Spider-Verse makes sense as it shows that the makers are not milking the series for money (*cough* Fast & Furious series). Also, many fans believe that Sony will delve into the live-action Miles Morales projects after Beyond the Spider-Verse, which makes sense, too, given the character’s popularity and significant mainstream presence. Diehard Spidey fans know that Miles was met with immense hate after his debut in the comics. Seeing the character getting the respect it deserves is nothing short of a miracle. And Miller and Lord’s duo have contributed a lot to this scenario.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is currently running in theatres. As for Beyond the Spider-Verse, it will arrive in theatres worldwide on March 29, 2024. Stay tuned for more updates.
