Last week, we had made you aware that the unanimously admired Indian superhero movie ‘Minnal Murali’ had become the first Malayalam film ever to be included in the Netflix global top ten list. The movie was watched by OTT audiences worldwide for 5.99 million hours during the 20th to 26th December week.
And now, ‘Minnal Murali’ has registered massive weekly viewing hours stats on Netflix as the film was watched for a whopping 11.44 million hours this week, that is, from 27th December to 2nd January. The twofold increase is apparently due to two reasons. Firstly, because the film was released on Netflix on 24th December, that is, on the fifth day of the week. And secondly, because of the movie’s favorable reviews and strong word-of-mouth feedback.
The only two international movie titles which are ahead of ‘Minnal Murali’ are the Brazilian comedy movie ‘Lulli’ and the heartrending French drama ‘Vicky and Her Mystery’. The most-watched non-English Netflix film ‘Vicky and Her Mystery’ was watched for 15.21 million hours during the week. Moreover, another Indian film ‘Sooryavanshi’ is still on the list with 1.97 million hours under its belt.
Helmed by Basil Joseph, ‘Minnal Murali’ is set during the 1990s period and follows the superhero origin story of a small-town tailor named Jaison (played by Tovino Thomas). When Jaison is struck by a bolt of lightning (in a rare astronomical event), it bestows him special powers like super speed, extraordinary strength, telekinesis, and extreme agility. How Jaison embraces his powers to become a local superhero and assumes the titular mantle of Minnal Murali to fight his evil counterpart and to protect the people, forms the rest of the film’s plot.
