‘Mission: Impossible 7’ Insurance Suit Takes an Interesting Turn

Last year in August, we had made our readers aware about Paramount’s massive $100 million insurance policy for ‘Mission: Impossible 7’ through Federal Insurance Company (Chubb’s parent company). The insurance policy was taken to cover risks pertaining to the unavailability of key cast members, like Tom Cruise or director Christopher McQuarrie, due to sickness, death, or kidnapping.

However, when Paramount had asked for reimbursement for financial losses owing to pandemic induced production delays, the insurance company reportedly refused to cover the majority of losses incurred by the studio. This resulted in a lawsuit filed by the studio against the insurance company. The studio opined that the insurance company was trying to restrict its claim to $1 million against a much higher amount of incurred losses.

As per the latest update regarding the insurance suit, Paramount has arrived at a confidential settlement with the insurance company pertaining to claims for multiple production delays for ‘Mission: Impossible 7’ owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Before the mediation process was to begin on Thursday, both the studio and the insurance company have reportedly filed a notice in the court suggesting that the two parties have reached a settlement.

Paramount’s spy actioner ‘Mission Impossible’ starring Hollywood heartthrob Tom Cruise is inarguably one of the most high-profile film franchises globally. Before the official filming wrap for ‘Mission Impossible 7’ aka ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One’, the film’s production was previously delayed multiple times starting from February 2020, then in March 2020, two times in October 2020, and subsequently three more times mostly because of the COVID-19 pandemic. These delays were ostensibly the cause for high value insurance claims and hence the legal dispute.

Initially slated for a July 2021 theatrical release, Christopher McQuarrie’s ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One’ starring Tom Cruise is now scheduled to release on 14th July 2023. While its sequel ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two’ is expected to release on 28th June 2024. Perhaps, the multi-million dollar legal case between Paramount and the insurance company will act as a reference point and a lesson for film production studios and insurance companies not only in the US but across the globe.
