The 2008 film ‘Mithya‘ starring Naseeruddim Shah and Ranvir Shorey is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video. It is a comedy directed by Rajat Kapoor and gathered pretty good reviews at the time of its release.
Ranvir Shorey plays the role of a Bollywood extra who looks exactly like an underground don. He is taken captive by the rival gang of the don and they make a plan to kill the don and put the look alike in his place. The plot may look somewhat similar to Amitabh Bachchan’s Don but if you watch the movie you will see how different it is. The extra faces a terrible accident and starts suffering from dementia and thinks of him as the dead don himself. He starts killing members of the rival gang. It is one of the rare dark comedies that make people laugh hysterically but at the same time make them think. Mithya will make you think if it is your memory that truly makes who you are.
If you have seen ‘Ankhon Dekhi’ you must know what a terrific director Rajat Kapoor is. He captures the mundane life in the small city and churns out wonderful situational and conversational comedy. Mithya is an out and out comedy film and probably an addition to the list of very few actually good comedies on Indian OTT.
Saurabh Shukla had co-written the film with Rajat Kapoor and apart from Naseeruddin and Ranvir Shorey, actors like Neha Dhupia, Vinay Pathak, Manu Rishi played other important roles. The film had its theatrical release on the 8th of February in 2008 but has not probably been streamed anywhere on OTT for so long.
If you are a fan of dark comedies or if you are craving for some wonderful performances by actors like Naseeruddin Shah that have gone unwatched, you can watch Mithya. It is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
