‘Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea‘ is a Malayalam film that has been confirmed as a box office bomb. According to the latest reports, the film couldn’t even make back half of its production cost in box office revenue and since the movie is now going to stream on Amazon Prime Video, it will likely not be getting any more revenue from theatres around the globe. And to think, a Minister had to intervene and convince the film producer, Antony Perumbavoor, to release the film in theatres over a direct-to-OTT release, a month ago.
According to old reports, ‘Marakkar’ had earned close to Rs. 100 crores through online booking. Even if it was true, the box office numbers tell us a different story. The film started well in the opening weekend – but bad reviews cooled the anticipation for viewing the most expensive Malayalam movie of all time. And now, as per the latest reports, Marakkar has not even made Rs. 40 crores in the global box office. So, box office bomb, indeed.
‘Marakkar’ was released in theatres, earlier this month, on 2nd December 2021. While the film did win a lot of awards when it first premiered in Delhi at a National Film Festival, it was panned by critics all over the country. The film is a visual masterpiece and the music is brilliant, but according to film lovers and critics, the film needed work in the screenplay department.
Amazon Prime Video may not have got their wish of directly premiering ‘Marakkar’ on their OTT platform – but streaming it just two weeks after its theatrical release should be just as good. The movie is currently available for online streaming on the aforementioned platform so check it out if you guys are interested.
