That Shoojit Sircar has sold Gulabo Sitabo to Amazon Prime Video is old news. The news has been tweeted, shared and covered by everyone and his uncle on their respective media platforms. What’s juicier news is how much did Amazon Prime Video really pay to buy Gulabo Sitabo as straight to digital. Read on to find out!
As per reports from people in the know about the deal, the makers of Gulabo Sitabo had initially quoted an outrageous figure. They were confident that, headlined by two powerhouse personalities, Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana, their movie would certainly rake in that much in the theatres. 70 – 75 crore was their demand for exclusive rights to Gulabo Sitabo.
But Amazon Prime Video is known to drive a hard bargain. The streaming giant was having none of it. After much discussion and deliberation, the figure was brought down to a more reasonable 35 crores. Yes, that was the sum paid by Amazon Prime Video to buy the rights to Gulabo Sitabo.
The deal was done and Gulabo Sitabo was the property of Amazon Prime Video.
There’s also speculation that Shoojit Sircar might release Udham Singh, his next movie after Gulabo Sitabo on OTT as well. The movie stars Vicky Kaushal in the titular role of the freedom fighter who was sentenced to death in London for killing General O’Dwyer to avenge the Jallianwala Baug massacre. The movie is in post production as of now.
Gulabo Sitabo will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on 12th June.
