Last year Netflix India was dominated by Taapsee Pannu’s Haseen Dillruba. The movie also starring Vikrant Massey and Harshvardhan Rane is a perfect example of what a typical pulp fiction movie is like.
There are plot holes, dramatic events, exaggerated characters, and flashy dialogues. And that is what makes them so catchy in the eyes of the audience.
The film was the most watched film on Netflix India and why not. Even after many flaws, the movie was pulp fiction. It is the flaws that make pulp fiction beautiful.
Seeing the typical Bollywood trend of the 2000s and 2010s, the industry had almost stopped making films in that genre.
But Netflix seems to have rediscovered that. They seem to be telling stories which has all the quintessential elements of classic pulp fiction which the audience loves.
Monica O My Darling is exactly that. The movie has drama, comedy, mystery, and every concoction of entertainment. The audience seems to be liking the movie as is evident from the Twitter reactions.
But the bigger question lies in the impact of these movies.
Will Netflix’s experiment pave the way for more pulp fiction on OTT? We think it should.
Because Indian filmmakers are far from making any movie/series which gets universally celebrated. Thus they must focus on works that appeal to the Indian mass.
But yet again, it is for the future to decide.
