The nation wanted to see “Monkey Man,” an exciting take on Indian mythological characters, but as of now, the future does look dim for the Dev Patel film. The film has certain elements that might provoke a group of people, and that can’t be avoided, but stopping the release just for that is somewhat absurd.
See, having a good censor board is a valuable asset for all countries, but if the board fails to have faith in the audience, it turns out to be a problem. Especially when it deals with provocative films, there always are clashes of thoughts, and practically, “Monkey Man” isn’t from that category anyway.
In the USA box office, the film managed to gross a solid number, even debuting at the second spot. Earning $30M in its box office run, the film was compared with some of the biggest hits of the industry like “John Wick” or “Taxi Driver.” But the Indian audience was deprived of it.
“Monkey Man” is now getting a VOD release in other markets such as the USA, and that too on the 23rd. Ironically, it is being reported that the USA and Canada audience will have access to the Hindi dub as well. Though this is a rumor, this event might encourage piracy later.
And if the board decides to change their mind, it won’t be a major success as people would definitely use unfair means to watch it anyway. Though “Monkey Man” definitely offers a great theatrical experience, they could opt for an early OTT release. But, practically speaking, the fans would definitely love a theatrical run of the film.
As per certain rumours, Monkey Man might get the theatrical release afterall, in May, there is no official update as of now.
