SPOILER WARNING!
WTH? This reaction pretty much sums up viewers’ reactions after watching the latest episode of the Disney+ Moon Knight series. Episode 4 commences with a full ‘Indiana Jones’ vibe and turns into the craziness of an asylum. If the previous episodes were not enough to impress you, the latest one will succeed at that job. Apart from setting the tone for the upcoming entries, Episode 4 also delivers something truly special and breathes fire of freshness in the ongoing Phase Four of the MCU.
Episode 4, The Tomb, starts with one of the main avatars placing Khonshu’s ushabti in a secret place. And we see Layla saving Marc (and Steven) from some goons by lighting up their vehicle in the middle of the desert. They both reach Ammit’s tomb and encounter one of the zombie-like ancient priests. Layla finishes off that priest and meets Harrow. The latter reveals that Marc was one of the mercenaries who were involved in her father’s death. Somewhere at that Egyptian ancient site, Steven discovers Alexander’s tomb and figures out that the former Macedonian ruler was the voice of Ammit. He pulls out Ammit’s ushabti from the throat of Alexander’s dead body.
Moments later, Layla arrives at the scene and begins to confront Marc. This scenario causes Marc to take control of the body and he begs her to leave that place before the arrival of Harrow. He tells her that one of his partners got greedy and started shooting everyone. And it resulted in her father’s death. He also shot Marc but he was miraculously saved by Khonshu. Soon, Harrow and his team reach there. The former tells Marc to stop thinking about Khonshu and start living a peaceful life. But Marc displays retaliation only to get shot by Harrow.
This is where everything gets crazy. The final act of the episode shows Marc in an asylum-type facility with Harrow serving as the head doctor and Layla as one of the patients. He tries to escape from the asylum and finds Steven in one of the tombs. They both locate another tomb there but leave it. And then, they are greeted by an ancient Egyptian hippo deity, Ahti.
Is Marc being completely honest about the death of Layla’s father? And who was his partner? His third personality? We all know that Jake Lockley serves as the third personality. He is a cab driver in the comics. But it seems like the makers have turned him into a ruthless killing machine. If that’s the case, then Marc’s relationship with Layla is already on a path of doom.
Is Marc dead? We don’t think so. It looks like he is in some sort of comatose situation where he starts dreaming about the asylum. But meeting Steven makes Marc realises that this is not ‘reality’ at all. And what’s up with Ahti? The Egyptian hippo goddess is considered a historical malevolent deity. Plus, hippos are a sign of power and chaos in Egyptian culture. She will play a crucial role in making the viewers understand what the hell is going on.
