It has been a week since the Mortal Kombat trailer dropped on multiple social media platforms, and fans of the gaming franchise have been watching and re-watching the series for days on end. It has been watched so many times, 116 million views in fact, in just one week since it was released that it eclipsed even the first weeks’ viewings of the red band trailers of Deadpool 2 and Logan, making the trailer of Mortal Kombat, the most viewed Red band Trailer of all time.
The trailer apparently trended on 52 different markets on YouTube alone and another 28 markets on Twitter, with over 98% positive to neutral social sentiment rating. RelishMix, a social media tracker also claims that the viral reposting for the Mortal Kombat’s red band trailer is a whopping 47:1 ratio.
And it is not surprising to see this amount of positive response. After a semi-decent movie was released back in 1995 and then a failure of a sequel in 1997 which killed the franchise, this reboot was widely awaited by the loyal Mortal Kombat fans for more than 20 years. With so many fan favourites in the trailer like Scorpion, Sub-Zero and Raiden, along with the brilliant visuals – most fans will probably be satisfied in the direction the movie seems to be taking. Especially the gore and violence that comes from the brutal fatalities, which separates Mortal Kombat from other fighting games.
But not everyone is satisfied. Fan-favourite, Johnny Cage is nowhere to be seen in the trailer. Johnny Cage is one of the oldest characters in the series, who has been part of the Mortal Kombat game franchise from the very first game itself. Fans have been asking after the “movie star” character, and he has been trending ever since the trailer dropped on 18th February. Many fans, like us, believe that Cage is being saved for a special cameo or appearance, but there could be a chance he won’t even be included in this movie altogether. Who knows, if the movie succeeds, we will probably get another one, which will hopefully have Cage.
For now we will have to wait for the film to drop in theaters and on HBOMax on April 16th 2021. Check out the red-band trailer down below:
