2024 has been a year for the books for Indian cinema. From leaving a mark at international red carpets, to coming out with brilliant stories told through impactful means, Indians have truly done it all this year and we’re not even halfway through!
One title that seemed to resonate with large audiences lately was ‘Laapata Ladies’, a comedy-drama film directed by Kiran Rao. The plot revolves around two newlyweds who find themselves inadvertently separated from their husbands, just moments after their respective weddings.
Although there was initial debate about whether the film was an original script, the film has fought against all odds and emerged victorious. So much so, that it is now, officially, the most watched Indian film of 2024 on Netflix!
With a whopping 15.7M views so far, the feature has surpassed the Ajay Devgn – R Madhavan starrer horror thriller ‘Shaitaan’, the Hrithik Roshan – Deepika Padukone action thriller ‘Fighter’, and the Ranbir Kapoor led gritty thriller ‘Animal’.
‘Shaitaan’ garnered 14.8M views, whereas the viewership for ‘Fighter’ and ‘Animal’ was 14M and 13.6M respectively.
While numerous fans hailed the feature and cited the cinematography, plot and performances are reasons for the difference, many were also quick to point out other reasons like the duration for which the title has been streaming on Netflix, and a mediocre performance at the theatres.
Well, either way, congratulations are in order for the entire team for having achieved this huge milestone!
