Cobra Kai, the amazing amazing Martial Arts-themed show that was previously at YouTube Premium, will now stream on Netflix! The streaming giant has picked up the third season of the show, which received high admiration from the audiences that have watched it. So much so, that Cobra Kai has been nominated for two Emmys in the past, for its fantastic stunts choreography and coordination.
YouTube is cutting back on its slate of scripted shows, and is keener on non-scripted shows. So, even though both seasons of the Cobra Kai series were a smashing success for YouTube and Season 3 was ready for streaming, it was not keen on a fourth season of Cobra Kai, while the creators wanted to keep the option of Season 4 open. Thus, at the end of May, YouTube relinquished ownership of Cobra Kai. The series returned to Sony Pictures, original creators of the property.
Recognising the huge potential presented by Cobra Kai, Netflix swooped in for the kill, and picked up the two older seasons of the series, and also the almost complete new season 3.
Cobra Kai is the TV continuation of The Karate Kid series of films. It is created by Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald, and stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka, both of whom are reprise roles from The Karate Kid. Set 34 years after the Karate Kid films, Cobra Kai has Zabka back as Johnny Lawrence. Now firmly in middle age, Johnny reopens his old Cobra Kai karate dojo in a bid to get his life back together. He plays mentor to a bunch of misfit youths. His arch-rival Daniel LaRusso returns to renew the rivalry. Played again by Ralph Macchio, LaRusso is now a rich and successful car dealer. The series has Will Smith as one of the executive producers.
Stunt coordinators of Cobra Kai, Hiro Koda and Jahnel Curfman, were nominated for Emmys for the Best Stunts Coordination, for their brilliant work in the series. Season 2 ended on a breathtaking confrontation between the two Dojos, and its outstanding stylised stunts dazzled viewers then. Season 1 of Cobra Kai was more appreciated than Season 2, and yet, audiences can’t wait for Season 3.
Said Netflix’s VP of original series, in a statement to the media, “The appeal of The Karate Kid saga is timeless, and Cobra Kai picks up right where it left off without missing a beat…. We can’t wait to introduce a new generation of fans to Cobra Kai and are thrilled to be its new home around the world.”
Netflix will stream the first two Seasons later this year, and the new Season 3 after that. Stay tuned to Binged.com for more news on Cobra Kai.
