Since the past few years we have witnessed countless number of remakes and reboots of a hit franchise or a movie that released before and did good business. The classic example could be none other than Disney.
Disney in the past several years have been creating live action reboot or live action CG adaptation for making a new film. Examples for this :- Beauty and the Beast, The Jungle Book, The Lion King, Alaadin, recently released Mulan and the upcoming Cruella which is going to be a live action adaptation of One Hundred and One Dalmatians.
This move although looks enticing for the audience and it is quick way to earn money. And why do we say it is a quick way? Well to be honest there is no original input going in it. Hence nothing original has been coming since a long time.
So why are these big platforms doing this? Well to answer it simply, they are just cashing in on the nostalgia. Do you know that people who have grown up with these animated flicks will definitely pay to watch a decent live action adaptation for it. In a way reliving their childhood memories. Hence these movie already have an audience way before they are released.
Well this it is not only the case in films, as several of the TV shows have been doing this as well. The best examples for it can be Twin Peaks, or the recently renewed Dexter. The makers came with an announcement that Dexter will be revived for a final Season consisting of 10 episodes which will continue the journey of the dark passenger. This surely has made the fans cheerful as they weren’t satisfied with the ending of Dexter which can give a tough competition to Game Of Thrones’ ending.
Another example for “Cashing In On Nostalgia” can be in the form of a rumor that has been going around which involves the three spider-man’s coming together for a live action film yes you read that right there have been plenty of rumors surrounding that in the upcoming Spider-Man 3 which stars Tom Holland, there will be a cameo from Tobey Maguire ( Spider Man ) and Andrew Garfield ( The Amazing Spiderman ) who both played Spiderman in their respective films.
It has created a stir in the social media where everyone is waiting for this. Regardless of it might happen or not, people are still really excited about it. This is because people have grown up with Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man and with the current scenarios of “team ups” and “verse” people are going frenzy over the announcement. It will be a missed opportunity if the idea doesn’t get to the screens.
Hence seeing the results of that these reboots and live action films are getting, one might feel that these are good for creating excitement among the audience and relive the old moments with better technologies. But one might also feel that in the world which will be filled with remakes and reboots there should be a decent amount of original ideas that should be getting the same success.
Safe to say that in the coming years we will be witnessing several of old content getting a reboot with current technologies to make more cash.
