In celebration of Indian National Science Day (August 23), The Binged is featuring four space science movies available on Netflix that can inspire astronomy enthusiasts and fans of visual storytelling. These recommendations will not include Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar (2014) or Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity (2013).
1. Stowaway (Genre: Drama Thriller)
Released in 2021 and directed by Joe Penna, Stowaway follows a mission to Mars where an accidental stowaway is discovered. The movie stars Anna Kendrick, Daniel Dae Kim, Shamier Anderson, and Toni Collette. It showcases themes of camaraderie and self-sacrifice, with standout performances by Kendrick and Anderson.
2. Passengers (Genre: Romance)
Directed by Morten Tyldum and released in 2016, Passengers features Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence in leading roles. Although the storyline may not be strong, the movie’s performances and excellent cinematography by Rodrigo Prieto make it worth watching.
3. Don’t Look Up (Genre: Comedy/Humor)
This 2021 political-satire black-humour comedy boasts an ensemble cast, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Rob Morgan, Jonah Hill, Mark Rylance, and many more. Directed by Adam McKay, this movie offers effortless performances on a sensitive topic, making it a unique treat within its genre.
4. Edge of Tomorrow (Genre: Action Thriller)
Released in 2014 and directed by Doug Liman, Edge of Tomorrow stars Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. The action choreography, direction, and performances make this movie delightful to watch. It’s available on Amazon Prime Video.
