Mulan Breaks Disney Records …And Not In A Good Way

By Binged Bureau - Sep 12, 2020 @ 11:09 am

Mulan - Disney Plus HotstarThe live-action remake of the the classic hit Mulan has got an IMDb rating of 5.4 after a week since it’s release, making it the lowest rated Disney remake currently.

It ‘overtook’ the 101 Dalmations remake which has an IMDb rating of 5.7.

Mulan also holds another significant record. According to a viral chart on reddit, Mulan also has the highest disparity in rating (2.2 difference in rating) with its animated counterpart which had an IMDb rating of 7.6. In comparison, the second highest disparity was seen between Lion King (8.5) and the Jon Favreau directed remake (6.9) with a difference of 1.6 and the third is held by 101 Dalmatians which has a difference of 1.5. The best well received remake has been Favreau’s Jungle Book with a 7.4 rating and 2017’s Beauty and the Beast remake (7.1).

The film has been courting controversy since its release on 4th September for two separate yet hugely political reasons; the Disney live-action thanked the Xinjiang province and their authorities (who are using questionable methods to ‘educate’ a muslim minority in detention camps) and the lead actress Liu Yifei showed public support for the Hong Kong police (who were arresting protesters supporting the pro-democracy movement). These controversies followed by the hashtag #BoycottMulan, pretty much set its major audience approval trajectory.

However Critics have given fresh approval by giving a certified rating of 75% on Rotten Tomatoes, with audience providing 51% approval rating. Metacritic has also given Mulan a mixed score of 67 out of 100. Many critics have called the film, a fresh take on the animated classic with its visual effects leaving the both the audiences and critics stunned. The screenplay still needed work according too a lot of critics, with lot of the dialogue and characters portrayed called flat.

Donnie Yen, Jason Scott Lee, Gong Li, Ron Yuan, Tzi Ma, Yoson An, and Jet Li star in the Disney remake of Mulan, in prominent roles. The film won’t come out for the Indian audiences (in Disney+Hotstar) until mid December.
