The spy drama-thriller is set before the events of the Indo-Pak war of 1971. The film is based on an undercover RAW agent (Alia Bhatt), who is sent beyond the border to transmit critical information to India. It was directed by Meghna Gulzar and also featured Vicky Kaushal in a pivotal role.

Gandhi, 1982 (Streaming on Jio Cinema)
Directed by Richard Attenborough, the Oscar-winning film is based on the extraordinary life and struggles of Mahatma Gandhi (played by Ben Kingsley) and includes important events such as the South African train incident and his subsequent role in the Indian independence movement.

Sarfarosh, 1999 (Streaming on Zee5)
The action thriller movie follows the story of a determined police officer ACP Rathod (Aamir Khan), who makes it his mission to nab the culprits responsible for cross border terrorism, after his brother is killed by terrorists. The movie also features Naseeruddin Shah, Sonali Bendre, and Mukesh Rishi in important roles.

The Legend of Bhagat Singh, 2002 (Streaming on Amazon Prime Video, Lionsgate Play)
Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, it chronicles the life of Bhagat Singh – one of the bravest revolutionaries of the Indian Independence Movement who fought against British atrocities. The film portrays various events of Bhagat Singh’s life such as the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, Mahatma Gandhi’s non-cooperation movement, his joining of the Hindustan Republican Association to his days in the prison.

Major, 2022 (Streaming on Netflix)
The film is inspired by a hero of the 26/11 2008 Mumbai attacks – Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan (played by Adivi Sesh), an Indian Army officer who served in the elite Special Action Group of the National Security Guards (NSG). It narrates the events of how Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan saved the lives of many hostages during the terrorist attacks.

RRR, 2022 (Streaming on Netflix, Disney+ Hotstar, Zee5)
Helmed by S.S Rajamouli, the period action movie ‘RRR’ features Ram Charan and Jr.NTR in the lead roles and Ajay Devgn, and Alia Bhatt in pivotal roles. The film is a fictional tale set in the 1920s that revolves around two legendary Indian revolutionaries namely Alluri Sitarama Raju (played by Ram Charan) and Komaram Bheem (played by Jr. NTR).

Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, 2020 (Streaming on Netflix)
The biographical drama is inspired by the life of Gunjan Saxena (played by Janhvi Kapoor), who is regarded as the first woman Air Force officer to fly Cheetah helicopters in a combat zone during the Kargil War. The film also features Pankaj Tripathi, Angad Bedi, Manav Vij, and Vineet Kumar Singh in important roles.

Sardar Udham, 2021 (Streaming on Amazon Prime Video)
Shoojit Sircar’s historical drama starring Vicky Kaushal in the titular role is based on the life of the Indian revolutionary Udham Singh, who had assassinated former lieutenant governor of Punjab Michael O’Dwyer in London. The assassination was done to avenge the mass killings of many Indians at the barbaric Jallianwala Bagh massacre that happened on 13th April 1919 in Amritsar.

Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey, 2010 (Streaming on Google Play, YouTube, Apple – Rent)
The movie was based on the Chittagong uprising that happened in the year 1930. It follows a schoolmaster and revolutionary (Abhishek Bachchan) and his ambitious attempt to raid an armory with the help of a group of teenagers.

Madras Café, 2013 (Streaming on Netflix)
The political spy thriller helmed by Shoojit Sirkar is set amidst the backdrop of the Sri Lankan Civil War. The film follows an Indian Army officer (John Abraham) who is recruited by Indian intelligence agency RAW to supervise a covert operation in Sri Lanka.
