Troubles for young and talented director Karthick Naren’s long-delayed film “Naragasooran” just refuse to go away. First, the thriller was denied a befitting theatrical release due to financial issues. Then, the OTT boom sweeping the Indian content landscape brought hope for the film – audiences and makers hoped that Naragasooran would see the light of day if a streaming platform bought the film for a direct to digital release.
Finally, their hopes were rewarded. Naragasooran was picked up by SonyLIV, along with several other long-delayed Tamil films, to be streamed under SonyLIV’s newly minted “SonyLIV Tamil” arm. August 13 was set as the confirmed release date for Naragasooran, just in time to leverage the Independence Day weekend.
But hopes for the release of Naragasooran have again been dashed. Industry insiders have confirmed that the Naragasooran OTT release date has been pushed back from the originally planned 13th August. Reasons for the delay are quite petty, if you ask us.
As per information from people in the know, financial and legal issues are said to be the reason for the current delay in the Naragasooran release date on OTT. It is common knowledge that Naragasooran was beset with financial troubles from the very beginning. Those very same financial troubles are raising their head once again. It is being rumoured that financiers of the film want the production house of Naragasooran to clear all their debts before they go ahead with the film’s release. If not, then the film may even face some legal action.
Until the makers themselves issue a statement, all of the above should be taken with a pinch of salt. The entertainment industry is notorious for the spread of rumours and speculation. The matter has been kept under wraps, and no one except the makers know the exact reason for the delay in the Naragasooran release date.
One thing is clear though – Naragasooran will NOT keep its August 13 release date on SonyLIV. Naragasooran is a supernatural thriller film, the second in Naren’s “thriller thrilogy”, the first one being Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru, aka D16, a hit neo noir crime thriller. The Naragasooran cast includes Arvind Swami, Shriya Saran, Sundeep Kishan, Aathmika and Indrajith Sukumaran.
