A national streaming platform is being planned to be created within the National Film Development Corporation website as confirmed by Apurva Chandra, secretary of the ministry of information and broadcasting as he spoke ahead of a panel at NFDC’s Film Bazaar.
This announcement is part of the plan that attempts to create India a global content hub and promote talent and good quality content. The content hub plan also includes focusing on animation, visual effects and gaming sectors for which task force is already working on a report. This will be followed by skill upgradation and education to encourage more people join the sector.
The idea is to utilise the vast possibilities India has to offer given its large pool of talent that can be tapped into and upscaled further. The other major advantage is the cost effectiveness in India compared to American and/or European markets.
The content hub will also benefit creators and producers simultaneously, providing them a platform to showcase what they got. While India is already a huge source of content, there’s always scope for improvement.
For this panel members offered ideas like creating story development labs at central and state levels alongside private labs. One other common idea was to launch a marquee international project to attract filmmakers and producers from around the world to choose India as a filmmaking location by highlighting the cost incentives and highly skilled English speaking workforce.
